New at Spacecraft: Iconic Kiwi Artist FLOX

We’re excited to welcome the work of Hayley King, one of Aotearoa’s most recognisable contemporary artists, to Spacecraft.

Better known by her artist name FLOX, Hayley first made her mark on the streets of Auckland in the early 2000s, transforming grey city walls into vibrant celebrations of New Zealand’s natural world. Using intricate stencil techniques and bold colour, her work features native birds, flowers and foliage that honour the environmental taonga of Aotearoa.

With a career spanning more than two decades, FLOX has evolved from street art pioneer to internationally recognised artist. Her murals and artworks can now be seen everywhere from Berlin and Hong Kong to New York and India (and she has even been part of the Taupo Graffiato Festival in the past!), while her signature prints continue to bring her distinctive style into homes across New Zealand and around the world.


From Street Art to Iconic Kiwi Style
FLOX’s roots are firmly planted in the street art movement - as an aerosol and stencil artist with a fine art degree, she began painting murals across Auckland in 2003. Her striking compositions, often featuring tūī, kōkako, fantails and lush native flora, quickly became recognisable for their vibrant colour and delicate detail.

Part of what makes FLOX’s work so compelling is the contrast she creates between nature and the urban environment. Her murals place organic forms and wildlife against brick, concrete and city streets, creating a powerful reminder of the natural world within our everyday surroundings.

Her process itself is also distinctive. FLOX is known for her carefully crafted stencil technique, often hand-cut and layered to build intricate, multi-dimensional artworks. These stencils are artworks in their own right, reflecting her commitment to the craft and the handmade process she calls a ‘labour of love.’
